Military Experience:
Michael served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a military police officer, with deployments to Iraq where he worked with Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams and conducted Quick Reaction Force missions to assist stranded or cornered personnel. His military experience shaped his leadership style and instilled values such as decisiveness, loyalty, and the ability to perform under pressure. Michael’s commitment to his team is reflected in his philosophy that he never asks an employee to do something he wouldn’t do himself. His ability to make critical decisions based on incomplete information and manage large teams has directly contributed to his success in the construction field.
Construction Career:
Michael’s career in construction began when he was a teenager, working as a construction general laborer. Over the years, his passion for the industry and desire to provide clients with honorable service led him to take on more responsibility, eventually becoming a project manager and later the general manager of a residential construction company. In response to witnessing unethical practices in the industry, Michael pursued his general contractor license to ensure his clients received the services and quality they were promised.
Today, Michael specializes in residential remodeling and additions, with additional experience in small commercial projects. He has a hands-on approach to overseeing projects and ensuring every client is guided through the process, from pre-construction planning and selections to post-construction follow-up.
Black Sheep Construction LLC:
As the co-owner of Black Sheep Construction, a certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business, Michael is proud of his company’s dedication to doing things “the right way.” Black Sheep Construction offers a personalized, client-focused approach where long-term relationships are built. Michael and his team provide end-to-end project management services, including guiding clients through the complex world of permits, selections, and budgeting. The company’s philosophy centers on honor, integrity, and maintaining lasting relationships with clients, who return for multiple projects.
In addition to managing operations, Michael serves as the Director of Project & Production Management, where he reviews financials, sets strategic goals, and ensures all projects meet the highest standards.
Real Estate Investor:
Michael is also a successful real estate investor, managing a portfolio of 60 units. His journey began with the purchase of a duplex, which he renovated and expanded into a tri-plex with six storage units. This investment more than doubled the property’s income and set the stage for larger ventures. His most notable project involved partnering with an investor to purchase a 30-unit apartment complex, which they flipped for a $1 million profit within a year. This experience taught Michael valuable lessons in managing large-scale renovations, budgeting, and the importance of strategic business partnerships.
Insurance Adjuster & AIC Designation:
Earlier in his career, Michael worked as a licensed insurance adjuster, where he managed property insurance claims and coordinated with construction companies on projects. This experience gave him valuable insight into the inspection process, project scoping, and understanding client needs. It also allows Black Sheep Construction to navigate insurance-related projects more effectively, ensuring clients receive the coverage they deserve.
OSHA & Safety Training:
Michael holds the OSHA 510 certification (Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry) and has completed various OSHA safety courses. As a result, he has implemented comprehensive safety protocols at Black Sheep Construction, ensuring all job sites adhere to industry safety standards.
